My Medal

I.C.A.S 2011

My name is Aaron Lew. Last year I went to the University of Auckland to receive my medal for the I.C.A.S Spelling for 2011. It was for coming top out of the New Zealand Year 5's who participated.

So how did I get to be top of New Zealand Year 5?

Well, it all started with an assessment I did at school. It was the I.C.A.S Spelling assessment I found it very, very challenging.

When the results came in about 8 weeks later it told me I had got 43 out of 45. It also said I got a "High Distinction" pass. It didn't say anything about me getting top in New Zealand!

Then about 2 weeks after the results came in our deputy principal Miss Lindsay called me to her office, was I in trouble? No, I wasn't! In fact, it was in that office that I found out that I had come first out of the New Zealand Year 5 students.

I didn't get an invitation until about one month later. During that month, I wondered if I had got a medal or if it was just a mistake. But when the invitation came in, it meant that I had definitely earned myself a medal!

Then before I knew it, I was at the University of Auckland in the Owen Glenn Building waiting to get my medal. I was seated with all the other spelling medallists in seat H5.

When it was my turn I went to claim my medal. It was zinc alloy, plated in gold with my name engraved on it. It was in a black box covered in velvet. Wrapped around it was an orange ribbon. I'd say it's the most outstanding academic achievement I've had so far!

A few days later, Miss Lindsay rang to say I had an interview with a journalist from the newspaper, Manukau Courier. It got published in January 2012.

Now I'm a Year 6 and I'm taking I.C.A.S again for this year. I hope I can earn myself another medal this year!

If I try hard enough maybe my twin sister, Aimee, won't beat me either!
