We would like to acknowledge some of our Year 5 & 6 students who took part in the Kiwi Maths, English and Science competitions.

Some of them scored Excellence in various subjects.

The Royal New Zealand Ballet

Last Friday Kōwhai was very fortunate to attend a performance of Dazzlehands by the Royal New Zealand Ballet. The show was based on the story by authors Sacha Cotter and Josh Morgan and had us laughing and dancing along in our seats.

Pig, the main character, was a favourite as he got all the other animals moving, grooving, twirling and spinning around the stage and finally bursting out their own dazzlehands!

The costumes were sparkly and the final sequined bodysuit was a big surprise. The week before we had our own chance to learn some of the choreography from a dance educator. A new experience for many of us, this was a great introduction to the world of ballet.

We are very grateful to the RNZB for the free tickets and the Due Drop Centre for covering our bus costs enabling our children to attend this event.

MCS Art Walk

Over Term Three, children and teachers were busy creating amazing artwork for our Art Walk in Week 9.

There was lots of artwork displayed on the walls in all the pods, but we also had installations outside. You could go under the sea with Tōtara, check out the native birds in our sandpit, meet some cute felines in Cats Corner, and outside Nikau, we had giant fuchsia plants hanging.

You could go dotty in Kauri Pod's Obliteration Room.

Kōwhai created three animal habitats on umbrellas, and just to show the staff were nearly as talented as the kids, the staff decorated a rock to create a rock koru on our rainbow turf.

Students were extremely proud of their work and were excited to share it with whānau and friends.

Thank you to everyone who came along to the Art Walk; we hope you were impressed.

And a final thank you to the Manurewa Central Board of Trustees for their support in making this happen.

Chess

This term our chess team has competed in two tournaments the South Auckland Primary School Chess Championship and the Papatoetoe Central School Chess Invitational.

In each of these tournaments our team has placed 2nd.

At the South Auckland Championship Toby won a prize for being the top board 1 player.

At the invitational Vivian received a prize for being the top girl player and Amin received a prize for being top board 4 player.

It is amazing to watch the skill and sportsmanship of these young players. We are looking forward to competing more in the next two terms.

Interschool Swimming

The MPSSA Swimming Carnival was held on Tuesday, the 27th of February.

We had a great day, despite the drizzly weather in the morning. Our team made Manurewa Central School proud with the effort they put into their races as well as the fantastic sportsmanship they displayed.

Our team was awarded 1st in sportsmanship for the support they showed their team as well as students from other schools.

We received the final overall times and placings, and the overall placegetters are as follows: Micah Scorringe gained 3 firsts, Lucy Head gained a third, Mackenzie Millett gained 2 firsts, Charlotte Messine gained a first, Phillip Vela-Tito came away with a third, Sadie Maletino-Peri gained a third, Akaiti Henry came away with 2 third places, and Lyla Munro gained a first.

The girls' relay team also placed 3rd overall, and the boys came 2nd equal. A great effort by all our students. A huge thank you to all our supporters on the day; you were a fantastic support for us all!
